Reel Rock Tour 7

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. At least, it is if you like high-adrenaline climbing films. If that doesn’t sound remotely entertaining or exciting, hold this thought: first ascents, struggles, triumphs, loss and humor. Maybe you saw the Everest IMAX film when it was first released. Sure, the Shark’s Fin ascent may not hold the mainstream allure, but here’s why it’s important: it’s a first ascent (I keep repeating this).

The Shark’s Fin in the Meru region of the Indian Himalaya had rejected alpinists year-after-year, mostly because of weather, but also due to the sheer big wall climbing challenges at altitude. Not sold?

The Reel Rock Tour 7 lands in Connecticut this Friday and again next month. Think of it as a who’s-who for the climbing community at large and usually the best way to catch up on the latest trends in the field (or, a “what I’ve been doing on my summer vacation” report).

Proceeds for the event being held both at Trinity College this Friday and at Yale University on Nov. 30 benefit the Ragged Mountain Foundation (disclaimer: I have donated to this organization in the past) – and tickets, $10 each – $7 for students – can be found here.
